Johnny Chang
Johnny Chang went from being a struggling MIT student, to a member of the world known MIT Blackjack Team overnight. His exploits as part of this team have been featured in popular books and documentaries and have even been used as the plot line for a Hollywood movie. This these reasons, and many others, Johnny Chang is a proud member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame.
Johnny Chang in the Beginning
Johnny Chang was a student at MIT where he majored in electrical engineering. Between semesters one year, he decided to enjoy an IAP (Independent Activities Period) mini-course and he signed up for the blackjack card counting class. This was in 1979, and he enjoyed the class, but didn't think much of it. He was a struggling student, and didn't see much future for himself in blackjack without more capital than he had!
Johnny Chang Meets Blackjack
About two years later, he saw a sign on the MIT campus that appealed to him. It offered people to make $300 over their spring break. Johnny was intrigued. It turned out that the money was for playing blackjack. Johnny Chang was trained and tested by the MIT team and, in the spring of 1981, was sent to Atlantic City to try his luck as part of the MIT Blackjack Team. While he didn't do fantastically well at first, he was given a second chance and he continued to improve his game.
Johnny Chang and the MIT Blackjack Team
The MIT Blackjack Team continued for quite a number of years in an informal way at MIT. Then, in 1992, Johnny reorganized the team as a general partnership and he called it Strategic Investments. Eventually, Johnny went on to form his own team. His team liked to experiment with all sorts of advanced strategies, but Johnny Chang soon found that these extra strategies were a distraction. He refocused the team to look at blackjack basic strategy and card counting and they gained incredible success. They ended up winning more than $10 million from the casinos, putting Johnny Chang squarely in the Blackjack Hall of Fame!
Johnny Chang - A Star
Johnny Chang is well respected as a blackjack champion, as a leader of the MIT Blackjack Team, and as a member of the Blackjack Hall of Fame. He has amazed blackjack enthusiasts for years with his skill and his ability. He owns a fast-food franchise in the Las Vegas Stratosphere Hotel and is a consultant to casinos and game makers today. He was portrayed in the 1998 film, Rounders, as himself! And, he has written for Card Player magazine and for Trader Monthly.
