Dave Irvine
Born in Indiana to a professor and school teacher, Dave Irvine had never come across card games until he went to MIT and became friendly with his future business partner Mike Aponte. It was at MIT that Dave Irvine joined the infamous MIT Blackjack team and had an illustrious career that spanned over 6 years playing at casinos all over America, bringing in millions for the team and him. Today he lives in Naples, Florida and runs two successful businesses; his family owned and operated Engineering Company and the BlackjackInstitute.com website that provides training, manuals and hands on tutoring for potential Blackjack players.
Dave Irvine's Introduction to the MIT Blackjack Team
Dave Irvine to this day still maintains that it is only because of his business partner Mike Aponte that he joined the MIT Blackjack Team in the early 1990's. Irvine had come to MIT to do his masters in Biological Engineering and Aponte who was already part of the successful MIT Blackjack Team, saw the potential in Irvine to become one of the better players. Dave Irvine has a precise mind and pays a lot of attention to detail which is what the Blackjack players were looking for. At first Irvine was reluctant to join the team but after one game as a spotter he became hooked. Irvine loved the thrill and excitement of beating the casino, not to mention the money.
The Blackjack Winning Years
Dave Irvine continued playing Blackjack for over 6 years as part of the MIT Blackjack team. He attributes his successes which number in the millions to two things mainly; Edward Thorpe's book "Beat the Dealer" and practice using the card counting techniques. Even today he maintains that anyone can win at Blackjack if they pay attention and practice enough. Irvine describes his time as an MIT Blackjack player as one of excitement and thrills. He even describes how they used to strap wads of cash to their bodies in order to get into the casinos and build up the value of their bets. Another of his mottos is low profile, high gains.
Dave Irvine's New Blackjack Business
After six years on the MIT Blackjack team and with wins ranging in the millions, Irvine left the card counting world to pursue his own company. Today he still manages his own engineering consulting company which he runs with his sister. In 2004 Dave Irvine hooked up again with his college friend and card counting partner, Mike Aponte to set up a new business; Blackjack Institute.com. This is a web based business that provides training, manuals, seminars and live tutorials for potential Blackjack players. Irvine is happy to divulge the skills he learnt as an MIT Blackjack player to other potential players. He also is a practiced public speaker on the subject, his most recent appearance being at the Global Gaming Conference in 2007. Irvine may have taken the casinos for millions in the 1990's but continues today to make money from Blackjack by offering products and sharing training methods for winning Blackjack.
